Osmolality and Catheterization

چکیده
Osmotic activity is the process when water in one solution, with lower concentration of e.g. salt ions or sugar molecules, moves through a semipermeable barrier in the direction of a higher concentration to equalize concentrations. The osmotic activity could both be measured in milliosmoles/kilogram (mOsm/kg) solvent, i.e. osmolality, and calculated as milliosmoles/liter (mOsm/L) solution, i.e. osmolarity. 2,3 In human serum osmolarity is approximately equivalent to osmolality given the density of ≈1 kg/L of the fluid. 2,3

An economic analysis of strategies for the use of contrast media for diagnostic cardiac catheterization.
A decision tree model was used to estimate the incremental cost per quality-adjusted life year (QALY) of low- as opposed to high-osmolality contrast media for cardiac angiography. Analyses were done from the viewpoints of a third-party payer and society using data from a randomized trial and the literature. Assuming low-osmolality media reduce the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke, the i...
متن کاملN-acetylcysteine does not prevent contrast induced nephropathy after cardiac catheterisation with an ionic low osmolality contrast medium: a multicentre clinical trial.
OBJECTIVE To evaluate oral N-acetylcysteine in the prevention of contrast induced nephropathy (CIN) in patients at low to moderate risk undergoing cardiac catheterisation with ionic low osmolality contrast medium. METHODS In a multicentre double blind clinical trial 156 patients undergoing coronary angiography or percutaneous coronary intervention with serum creatinine > or = 106.08 micromol/...
متن کاملDetermination of some seminal plasma indices, sperm density and sperm motility in the Persian sturgeon Acipenser persicus
Some biological aspects of semen were investigated in the Persian sturgeon, Acipenser persicus, by determination of seminal plasma indices (ionic composition and osmolality), sperm density and their relationships with sperm motility. The osmolality of seminal plasma ranged from 42.00 to 111.00 mOsmol Kg-1. The concentrations of Sodium (Na+), Potassium (K+), Chloride (Cl-), Calcium (Ca2+) and Ma...
متن کاملEffects of seminal plasma ionic content, pH and osmolality on spermatozoa motility in bester (Female Huso huso × Male Acipenser ruthenus) sturgeon
The ionic contents, pH and osmolality of seminal plasma and their relationships to sperm motility indices (sperm motility duration and percentage of motile sperm) were evaluated in bester. Semen was collected from six bester specimens and their seminal plasma was evaluated. The seminal plasma contained 54.5±2.8 mM sodium, 22.33±2.5 mM chloride, 7.1±1.2 mM potassium, 3.55±0.6 mM calcium and 0.58...
